Jada Pinkett Smith Parents: Meet Robsol Pinkett Jr. And Adrienne Banfield-Norris
Born on September 18, 1971, in Baltimore, Maryland, United States, Jada Pinkett Smith was named after her mother’s favorite soap opera actress, Jada Rowland.
Pinkett Smith is of Jamaican and Bajan descent on her mother’s side, and the African-American heritage on her father’s side. Her parents are Adrienne Banfield-Jones, who was the head nurse of a Baltimore inner-city clinic, and Robsol Pinkett Jr., who was the owner of a construction company.
Banfield-Jones, who in the decade of 2010 became Adrienne Banfield-Norris, was pregnant while in high school; the couple got married, but divorced after a few months.
Banfield-Jones raised Pinkett with the help of her own mother, Marion Martin Banfield, a Jamaican-born social worker. Banfield saw her granddaughter’s enthusiasm for the performing arts, and she enrolled her in tap dance, piano, and ballet lessons.
Pinkett Smith has remained loyal to her mother. She stated, “A mother and daughter’s relationship is usually the most honest, and we are so close.” In addition, she said “[My mother] understood what I wanted and never stood in my way.”
She participated as the maid of honor at the wedding of Banfield-Norris in 1998 to Paul Jones, a telecommunications executive.
Pinkett Smith has shown great admiration for her grandmother and said, “My grandmother was a doer who wanted to create a better community and add beauty to the world.”
Pinkett Smith has been married to Will Smith since 1997, with whom she has two children; son Jaden as well as daughter Willow. In their union, she also serves as a step-mother to Smith’s son from a previous marriage with Trey Smith.
