James Joseph Florio was an American Democratic politician who was born on August 29, 1937, in New York, New York, United States.
As the first American of Italian descent to serve as governor of New Jersey, Florio served as the 49th governor of New Jersey from 1990 to 1994.
He served as a member of the New Jersey General Assembly from 1970 to 1975 and from 1975 to 1990 in the United States House of Representatives.
The late Florio was inducted into the New Jersey Hall of Fame in 2014. The Camden County Board of Chosen Freeholders named the Governor James J. Florio Center for Public Service, a primary county administrative building, in Florio’s honor in 2017.
He passed away from heart failure at a hospital in Voorhees, New Jersey, on September 25, 2022, at the age of 85.
