Fripp was a skier between 1927 and 1960. He played in the Interprovincial Rugby Football Union and Ontario Rugby Football Union between 1941 and 1947.
Johnny Fripp was born on February 11, 1921, in Ottawa, Ontario. He was a high school student in the Lisgar Collegiate Institute, before transfer into Glebe Collegiate.
He opted to skip college in order to play in the Interprovincial Rugby Football Union (IRFU) for the Ottawa Rough Riders.
