Ghanaian entertainment critic, Ruthy has debunked views of Ghanaian movie industry players who think using young actors the play the role of old folks resulted in the collapse of the industry.
Since the collapse of Kumawood, many stakeholders have pointed out the fact that directors cast young actors like Kwadwo Nkansah Lilwin to play the role of very old men as one of the causes that brought the multi-million cedis industry to its knees.
Ghana actress Portia Asare Boateng who shares the same view revealed that even though young actors can play these roles, they like certain traits found in old men which makes the act less real.
However, Ruthy opined that there is absolutely nothing wrong with Lilwin playing the role of the elderly man in movies. According to Ruthy, that is what makes actors like Lilwin complete and versatile as they can take on any challenge thrown at them.
Lilwin, one of the industry’s finest known for playing elderly roles also explained recently that there’s nothing wrong with the practice if the actor gets it right. He added that it was nothing new as it happens in even in Hollywood.
“Even Jackie Chan is cast an old man. Once you play the role well, there is nothing wrong with that. The challenge is when you cannot interpret the role the best way you should.”
