Merri Dee was American philanthropist and television journalist.
She was most well-known for her job at the Chicago, Illinois television station as well as the national cable station WGN-TV in the role of anchor and reporter between 1972 and 1983, and as director of community relations from 1983 until the year 2008.
Dee was president and a member of the leadership council for the Illinois chapter of the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) from 2009 until her death in 2022.
Dee was born on October 30, 1936, in Chicago, Illinois, United States. She was 85 before death.

Dee was born Mary Francine Dorham to John Blouin, who was a postal worker along with Ethel Dorham. Her mother went into labor while traveling to Chicago along with her husband, as they travelled back and forth between Chicago and New Orleans due to work. Dee, who was the youngest of six children, was raised in New Orleans after her mother’s death in 1939, when Dee was only two years old.
Dee’s father remarried four years after the demise of her mother. The woman she was living with abused her, and then sent her away to an orphanage. Dee in an interview with Contemporary Black Biography regarding her childhood with her stepmother said;
“I was terrifically abused by her… She actually adopted me [after Blouin’s death] and changed my name so that my family couldn’t help me. It was horrible.”
Her name was changed by her step-mother to make sure family members couldn’t be able to contact her. She also did not pay for her education after the age of 14. Dee went back to Chicago as a teen, attending Englewood Technical Prep Academy; graduation in 1955.
Dee relocated into New Orleans after high school to study at Xavier University, where she was majoring in business administration; she dropped out of school in order to help her siblings and found a job as a salesperson with IBM. Dee was offered her first job as a host at the radio station WBEE situated within Harvey, Illinois.
