Phillip William Read, widely known as Phil Read was born on 1 January 1939 in Luton, Bedfordshire, England.
He was an English competitive motorcycle racer.
Read started riding at the age of sixteen and was an apprentice fitter at Brown & Green manufacturer of industrial machinery based in his hometown of Luton.
He spent a decade and a half on the racing circuit; from 1961 to 1976.
Within this period, he won seven world titles and 52 grand Prix in the process becoming the first competitor to win world championships in the 125 cc, 250 cc, and 500 cc classes.
Read rode for Yamaha and MV Agusta teams. He appeared on a 1969 Yemeni postage stamp.
He had business dealings in the sale of boats, distribution of Premier helmets, and a Honda dealership.
Read was appointed Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) “for services to motorcycle racing”.
He died on 6 October 2022 at age 83.
