“The Underground Railroad” Thuso Mbedu has bagged a deal with Paramount+ to produce socially-conscious shows for regions outside the US.
In the terms of this agreement, Mbedu is expected to create, and develop exclusive documentary and scripted programming that will focus on VIS Social Impact’s most important pillars of equality as well as climate and health specifically for Paramount+ outside the US.
The division is headed in the direction of Georgia Arnold, SVP of social responsibility, the department was established last year within the scope of the Content for Change initiative, that aims to combat prejudice, bias, racism, and hatred by the content that it produces.
Mbedu is the main character of Sony’s upcoming The Woman King, opposite Viola Davis, and also played the lead for Amazon Prime Video’s historical fantasy thriller The Underground Railroad, which was her only South African leading woman of the US TV show.
“Having been privileged to work with Thuso on MTV Shuga: Down South, I’ve seen her powerful creative talent first-hand; I’m in no doubt that her skill and expertise will help our studio develop ground-breaking social impact-driven content with worldwide appeal,” Arnold said.
“As Africans we have so many unique and diverse cultures, histories and experiences that the world needs to see and hear about and, as an African woman, to get an opportunity to tell stories that will uplift, empower and shape new ways of thinking and seeing the world, is absolutely amazing,” Mbedu commented.
