His older brother, Ben Scott Jr, is his only sibling, and he is a sergeant major in the U.S. Army.

Scott is among eleven African-Americans who have served in the U.S. Senate, and the first African-American to serve in both chambers of Congress. He is the seventh African American who has been selected into the Senate, and is the fourth from the Republican Party.
He is the first African-American senator representing South Carolina, the first African-American senator to be elected from the Southern United States since 1881 (four years after the close of Reconstruction), and also being the very first African-American Republican to serve in the U.S. Senate since Edward Brooke left in 1979.
