Vanessa Bryant Awarded $16M Damages Over Unlawful Photos Taken Of Husband’s Body After Helicopter Crash

The wife of late legendary NBA star Kobe Bryant, Vanessa Bryant has been awarded $16M in damages after a court ruled that the lifeless body of her husband was unlawfully photographed by first responders.

In January 2020, a helicopter carrying Mr. Bryant and his 13-year-old daughter Gianna crashed in Los Angeles, killing the star on the spot as well as seven other people including the pilot.

Chris Chester, whose wife Sarah and daughter Payton, 13, died in the collision and was also granted $15 million by the court.

The jury determined that sheriff’s deputies and firefighters who responded to the fatal crash illegally snapped images of the wreckage, which included the LA Lakers player and his daughter’s body, and shared them with others.

The LA County’s attorney argued that “site photography is essential” and that the pictures had not been made available to the general public but the argument could not stand.
