Senegal won the 2022 African Nations Championship final against hosts Algeria 4-4 on penalties dashing Algeria’s dream of hosting and winning the tournament.
Both sides began the match which is meant to crown a new champion for the continental competition on a very cautious note, with both teams being wary of committing mistakes.
The opening half ended goalless, leading both managers, Madjid Bougherra and Pape Thiaw to tweak their sides for the second half to engender a better fortune for the half.
Senegal came closest to scoring when Diallo’s long-range effort flew over the crossbar, leaving the bench on edge. The Algerians also came forward in the game, with Mahious making an amazing run into the opponent’s box from the center of the field before playing a one-two with both Zakaria Draoui and Belkhither.
The resulting shot was stopped by Ousmane Diouf.
After the score remained goalless, they played an extra 30 minutes of football before settling the match through penalties.
