Henry B. Tippie was an American businessman. In the Rollins Corporation, he is now inducted into the NYSE Hall of Fame, for pioneering the leveraged buyout through the acquisition of Orkin in 1964.
Tippie was born in Belle Plaine, Iowa on the 5th of January 1927. He was raised on a farm in rural Iowa. When he graduated from high school, Tippie joined the Army Air Force on the day prior to D-Day.
He served in the Pacific theater. Following his service during World War II, Tippie used the G.I. Bill to enroll at the University of Iowa, studying to become an CPA.
Tippie played pivotal roles in various companies which included Rollins, Dover Gaming, and Dover Motor Sports. He was an advocate for many causes.
The donation he made to the University of Iowa stands as the biggest individual donation to date, which led to being named the Tippie College of Business getting a name in his honor. Allegheny College’s Tippie Alumni Center was named in honor of the couple.
Tippie has been a Gold Life participant from the Commemorative Air Force (CAF) since 1977. He was also a founding member of the CAF’s American Airpower Heritage Foundation. Also, he was a part of the CAF B-29/B-24 Squadron. This is one of the CAF Units that are based on the CAF National Airbase at Dallas Executive Airport.
