Ghanaian teenager Felix Afena-Gyan has denied the apparent racist comment made in the trending video in which José Mourinho presenting him with shoes.
The Portuguese had offered the Ghanaian forward his favourite pair of sneakers after his two goals led to an important 2-0 win in the match against Genoa in the Serie A on Sunday night, November 21.
Mourinho made good on his pledge by purchasing €800 worth of Balenciaga footwear for the young player aged 18. The show was recorded and then shared via social media.
It was apparent that an unidentified person made an obscene comment, stating “there are bananas in the box” when Afena Gyan opened the box.
The comment has ruined the moment of love, however Afena-Gyan, in a post on social media, claimed that it was a joke about the fact that he ate a lot of bananas.
“I have been reading a lot of comments about the video I published earlier today of a special moment for me with the coach,” he said on Instagram.
“I want to assure you all that I was not offended by the background comment made in the video in any way — and that I truly believe there was no racist intent. “Since the first day I arrived at the club I have been welcomed into the family by everyone, who have joked with me like they do all members of the family.
“Because they see that I eat bananas a lot that has become a thing we laugh about sometimes — and I believe the comment was another example of that.”
Afena-Gyan made only his third appearance in Afena-Gyan was making his third appearance for Roma first team, and he did a great job this time.
He was brought on within the final minute of the game, and just eight minutes later, he scored a superb finishing, bringing Roma on top of the tough game.
The second one was a total amazing as he rolled in the high corner from outside the box, after avoiding the attack.
fena-Gyan joined the Italian team in the beginning of January of this year, after having moved from the lower-level of Ghana football.
