The richest man in the world, Elon Musk, has announced his brain-interface technology business, Neuralink, is ready to implant microchips into human brains.
Based on the information gathered, as described by Musk, the chip will assist in restoring function to those who suffer from paralysis or other types of brain-related challenges.
He continued to explain that the chips that will be implanted in the brains of people are designed to monitor as well as stimulate the activity of brain cells to help patients with severe spinal cord injuries as well as neurological illness.
The Tesla owner offered an in-depth description of his latest invention at Wall Street Journal’s CEO Council Summit.
He explained: “Neuralink is working well in monkeys, and we’re currently conducting extensive testing to ensure that it’s highly safe and reliable, and that the Neuralink device can be securely removed.
“I think we have a chance with Neuralink to restore full-body functionality to someone who has a spinal cord injury.”
Musk explained the purpose of the chip, stating that it could enable someone disabled to access a smartphone using their brain.
“Later versions will be able to shunt signals from Neuralinks in brain to Neuralinks in body motor/sensory neuron clusters, thus enabling, for example, paraplegics to walk again,” he added.
